Abstract:
Abstract (Translated):
The article considers how the temporalization of the organization of value creation in the German metal engineering industry might undermine industry-wide collective wagesetting. We start by deriving our concept of “service-based projectification” to illuminate the inter-organizational aspects of a temporally flexibilized value creation process emerging from the service-oriented project business of machine and plant equipment manufacturers. Using two case studies we illustrate how service-based projectification has particularly affected wagesetting for labor-intensive service activities at two system suppliers. Our case studies reveal that even the manufacturing core of the German economy is threatened by fragmented collective bargaining, although this varies in quality and intensity depending on labor relations in the focal firms.
