As the polar ice-cap melts, human and economic activity increases in the Arctic region. Thus, the risk of conflict in the area also increases. This has made it more urgent to establish non-military, cooperative mechanisms for environmental protection and security in the Arctic. On August 10, 2009, DIIS, along with the Danish and Canadian National Groups, Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, Parliamentarians for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Disarmament and the Swedish branch of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, held a seminar on an Arctic Nuclear Weapons Free Zone. The seminar was closed to the public to allow the researchers to engage in free and open discussion. With these proceedings, the knowledge, findings and call for an Arctic nuclear weapons free zone are now available to a wider audience.en
