Abstract:
In Brazil and around the world, the recent increase in the number of temporary teachers in public school systems is remarkable, but its impact on the quality of education remains unknown. Based on Brazilian evidence - including data from the School Census, (basic education development index (IDEB), and population statistics - this text aims to contribute to the still incipient discussion on the hiring of non-tenured teachers in public middle schools and their influence on student academic performance. Using descriptive analyses, the study provides an overview of the highlights on this issue and explores data from 2013 and 2023. In so doing, it nuances the currently dominant perspective on this topic in the country, broadening the scope of the debate and its implications for future educational policies. The text also points to potential avenues for reflection by public managers in Brazil.
