Zusammenfassung:
This study sought to trace the historical development of the conceptual construction of the social economy in Europe and the solidarity economy in Latin America (and in Brazil in particular), highlighting relevant convergences and divergences. Although they emerged in different contexts, both share, on the one hand, fundamental principles that characterize their organizational initiatives, such as: a critical origin of traditional capitalism; political organization of workers; work as a central factor; emphasis on solidarity, cooperation and community involvement; self-management and economic democracy; and strategic axis of government action. On the other hand, they differ in important aspects, especially with regard to: historical-geographic context; organizational forms; normative guidelines; and institutional recognition. Despite the challenges and limitations faced, the principles of a social and solidarity economy, from an integrative perspective, continue to inspire and problematize the process of economic development, seeking to reconcile efficiency with social justice, democratic guarantees and environmental sustainability.
