Abstract (Translated):
This paper investigates the dependency relations that intertwine the mining activity and the economy of the municipality of Brumadinho (MG). Based on the theoretical framework of the Dependency Theory, the text addresses different socio-economic dimensions such as aggregate production, international trade, formal employment and public finances. Data from RAIS (Annual Social Information Report), IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), João Pinheiro Foundation, Ministry of Economy (Comex Stat) and the State Court of Accounts (MG) were used. The analysis of economic dimensions converges with the conceptual basis of the Theory of Dependence, since it indicates a structural relationship of dependence, which arises from a historical process and reproduces itself rooted in the economic dynamics established in this process. Thus, the study concludes that strategies to achieve a new economic scenario for Brumadinho must establish ways of dealing with mining dependence that enable greater autonomy and efficiency for economic planning.
