Abstract:
Abstract (Translated):
Since 2012 the video on demand service Netflix has entered many European markets. Parallel to this development, many European countries introduced stricter laws against illegal file sharing. Using annual movie theater data for eight European countries from 2000 to 2015 a casual effect of these two quasi-natural experiments is estimated. We find that the introduction of Netflix actually increases the demand for movie theater tickets. Thus, Netflix may be seen as a complement to the movie theater experience. In contrast, the effect of stricter laws against file sharing has no significant effect on the movie theater demand, i.e. the stricter laws likely lack a strict enforcement.
