Abstract:
Abstract (Translated):
The crown condition of forest trees is an important indicator for the vitality of forests. Since the beginning of the 1980ies, the crown condition has been recorded in the annual forest condition survey (WZE) in Germany in order to determine the development of the crown condition and to detect impacts of environmental changes (e.g. soil acidification, climate change). High priority has been given to a harmonized recording procedure among the federal states and to a standardized and reproducible survey since its beginning. Instructions on recording procedure, on data submission and data storage for the nationwide evaluation however could solely be found in different sources (instructions of the federal states, minutes of the federal and state working-group, internal records of the Thünen Institute of Forest Ecosystems, Manuals of ICP Forests). The aim of this guideline and documentation therefore is to provide a summarizing, nationwide legal working document, which contributes to the implementation of the legal regulation on the surveys of the forest monitoring (Erhebungen zum forstlichen Umweltmonitoring, ForUmV), which regulates the forest condition survey by law since 01.01.2014. The present document outlines i.a. the aims of the forest condition survey, describes a consistent method for collection of harmonized and comparable crown condition data of high quality from the plots of the systematic sampling grid (Level I) and mentions measures for quality assurance.
