Abstract:
Abstract (Translated):
In a recent article, published in the “„Zeitschrift für Wirtschafts- und Unternehmensethik (zfwu)“, Hermann Sautter has accused the theory of „order ethics“ of propagating boundless greed. His criticism rests on a profound misunderstanding, as this contribution explains in detail. On the one hand it is shown that the misunderstanding stems from persisting in exactly that kind of tradeoff thinking to which order ethics proposes an orthogonal position. On the other hand it is shown that the misunderstanding results from the intentionalistic fallacy, i.e. from attributing the systemic outcomes of competitive processes not to the incentives of actors but to their motives. This fails to see that and why the approach of order ethics ascribes competitive outcomes to institutions instead of ascribing them to intentions.
