Abstract:
Abstract (Translated):
German investors hold a large share of their assets outside of the country. This made them particularly vulnerable to losses during the financial crisis. Several estimates have been presented to quantify these losses. This article discusses the possibilities and limitations of deriving the necessary information from the Bundesbank highly aggregated external sector statistics. The results are far lower in terms of value than generally assumed. Moreover, since 2007 the average annual yield on German investments abroad hastended to roughly equal that on foreign investments in Germany.
