Abstract:
Abstract (Translated):
Upbringing and educational chances of children depend on their whole social environment. For that reason a main principle of the development of the extended schools in Great Britain is: "An extended school is a school that recognises that it cannot work alone" (Department of Education and Skills). Many other institutions - e.g. health care, childcare, youth welfare and employment service - are participating in the different stages of upbringing. The Window Schools in Groningen are also building networks with all these institutions to create a favourable environment for children and young people. The Hanse Passage project Modern School has analysed good practices for opening school to the neighbourhood in the partner regions Groningen, East Riding of Yorkshire, Riga and Bremen and developed recommendations for learning in neighbourhoods. The project aimed to develop schools into Community Knowledge Centres which improve the integration of target groups (e.g. migrant families) into the educational system as well as into the labour market and into the social networks of city quarters and neighbourhoods.
