Abstract: The goal of this exploratory research is to identify attributes that can distinctly characterize iPad and examine the predictive power of iPad attributes, lifestyles, media dependency, and demographics on adoption of iPad, iPad usage patterns and intensity of iPad usage. Using a snowballing sample, an online survey was conducted with 623 university students in Mainland China, among which 217 were iPad users and 406 were non-users. Results of regression analyses show that application affordances is one of the few important attributes influencing the likelihood of iPad adoption, iPad usage patterns and intensity of iPad usage. Regarding lifestyles, strivers were found to be associated with higher likelihood of buying iPad; experiencers were more engaged and active when using iPad; innovators tended to use iPad for utilities, information-seeking and communication more often than other users. Interestingly, owning other Apple products has a positive impact on purchasing iPad. Furthermore, among iPad usage patterns, in particular, utilities and information-seeking are significant predictors for Intensity of iPad usage, which proves to be the most important functionalities for iPad.</description>

Abstract: Providing nationwide deployment of broadband services has become an important national agenda. The U.S. announced a National Broadband Plan and EU a Digital Agenda for Europe, both of which aim at providing access to 100 Mbps broadband services by 2020 to substantial numbers of households. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the migration factors among broadband services, namely CATV (BB), DSL and FTTx, in OECD 30 countries. In so doing, we focus especially on migration from CATV (BB) and DSL to FTTx in OECD 30 countries. Since FTTx is not independent of other two competing broadband services, not only FTTx but also CATV (BB) and DSL are analyzed. The results obtained by empirical panel data analysis, which covers the data from the year 2000 to 2010, revealed that (1) each three broadband services are substitutes, (2) faster connection speed promotes each broadband services adoption, (3) initial conditions of Cable TV in 2000 promote CATV (BB) diffusion, (4) unbundling of dry copper promotes DSL diffusion, (5) unbundling of fiber local loop restricts FTTx diffusion, and (6) investment decision on FTTx by carriers affects FTTx diffusion. This analysis will provide an important basis for national broadband policy in each country.</description>

Abstract: I explore the effects of on-net / off-net differentiation on network sizes in mobile telecommunications when both rational and non-rational consumers coexist in the market. In particular, three different types of consumers are modeled: (1) fully informed rational (FIR) consumers who are perfectly informed about the true market shares of all networks and choose the network with the lowest expected cost of a call; (2) partly informed rational (PIR) consumers who only observe market shares within a circular sensing field and choose the network with the lowest expected cost of a call based on these observed market shares; and (3) non-rational (NR) consumers who choose the network with the highest market share among their immediate neighbors. Using an agent-based simulation approach and by systematical variation of four key parameters of the model, three key results emerge. First, if the share of FIR consumers is too high, all consumers will eventually join the initially larger network A. Second, if their share in the population is sufficiently large, NR consumers can prevent the growth of clusters of consumers subscribed to network B. Third, if the share of PIR consumers is high, clusters of consumers subscribed to network B can grow, thereby increasing network B's market share, provided that the radius of their circular sensing field is small enough for the cluster size.</description>

Abstract: This paper presents an analysis of the marginal value of spectrum with a focus on mobile broadband and illustrated by three country cases: India, Sweden and Thailand. The paper use an engineering valuation approach, which refers to savings that can be achieved by acquiring appropriate amount of spectrum rather than to deploy additional sites, to estimate the marginal value of spectrum. It is complemented with a discounted cash flow valuation (DCF) in order to estimate the net present value of spectrum. Valuation of spectrum is a complex issue given that the value is depending upon the availability of spectrum, national spectrum regulation, competitive situation on the market and expectations about the growth of the mobile business. The paper is addressing three research questions: 1) What is the engineering value of spectrum in two country cases, 2) what is the DCF value of 3G spectrum in Thailand, and 3) what do the paid levels at spectrum auctions imply for the marginal value of spectrum. The methodology applied to calculate the engineering value is based on a comparison of different network deployment options using different amounts of spectrum. As spectrum and sites are substitutes it enables us to calculate how many additional sites that are required in order to compensate for an incremental allocation of spectrum. Moreover, the paper compare estimates of the marginal value of spectrum with prices paid at a number of spectrum auctions presented as the value per MHz per population. The contribution of the paper is the development of an approach and estimates of the marginal value for spectrum which could be of interest for regulators when setting reserve prices on spectrum. It could also be an input to corporate spectrum strategies and a contribution to the development of valuation approaches on spectrum.</description>
