Optimal Radio Access Network Selection in Multi-RAT HetNets Using Matching Game Approach

Title: Optimal Radio Access Network Selection in Multi-RAT HetNets Using Matching Game Approach
Authors: Anany, M. G.; El Din, Eman Serag; Elmesalawy, Mahmoud M.
Abstract: Due to the dramatic growth in mobile data traffic, Multiple Radio Access Technologies (Multi-RAT) heterogeneous Networks (HetNets) have been proposed as a promising solution to cope with the high traffic demand in mobile networks. In this work we propose a User Equipment (UE) radio access network selection algorithm in a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and LTE Multi-RAT HetNet, where matching game approach is applied. In this algorithm, UEs propose to their best candidate based on a utility function that is formulated to maximize their achieved downlink data rate. Then base stations accept or reject the proposals based on their utility. The performance of the proposed approach is investigated and compared to other models, and simulation results proved its outperformance.

Technical aspects in effective frequency spectrum pricing

Title: Technical aspects in effective frequency spectrum pricing
Authors: Abdelhaseeb, Muhammed M.; Digham, Fadel
Abstract: Microwave spectrum has been the primary solution for the rapid and cost-effective rollout of mobile backhaul infrastructure. Most of the mobile sites worldwide today are connecting via Microwave (MW) or Millimeter Wave (mmW) radio links. The evolution from 4G towards 5G presents significant challenges to all transport technologies and wireless ones make no exception. The goal of this paper is to investigate technical factors that can be used by regulators in order to achieve an effective frequency spectrum-pricing model applied for Microwave links. Especially in this stage, while all mobile operators need a huge bandwidth of spectrum to accommodate and backhaul high data rates for 4G and 5G applications. There are several strategies in theory that could be used by regulators in order to determine appropriate frequency spectrum fees. In addition, there are different factors when it comes to evaluating the value of spectrum. Many aspects and issues are facing regulators for designing an effective spectrum management, such as efficient spectrum usage, public and social benefits, introduction of new technologies, licensing regimes, etc. Therefore, in this paper we are looking for some technical factors that may be taken into account in order to have an effective frequency spectrum-pricing model for Microwave links.

The impact of ICT capital and use on economic growth

Title: The impact of ICT capital and use on economic growth
Authors: Sedika, Wesam M.; Emamb, Waleed
Abstract: This paper investigates how ICT capital and usage affects economic growth which is currently received considerable attention in the information society and its potential impacts on the economic growth. A sample of MENA and OECD countries including developing, emerging, and developed countries is used in this study to determine the impact of ICT on economic growth during the last 15 years using panel data analysis. This research provides statistical evidence for the impact of labor and capital on economic growth as reported in several previous studies. However, this impact differ between regions and level of development. It is observed that the impact of ICT on economic growth for OECD, emerging and advanced economies is higher than its impact in MENA and developing countries. This is contradicting to the impact of non-ICT capital where the impact of non-ICT capital on economic growth for OECD and advanced economies is much smaller than its value for MENA and developing countries. In addition, both mobile service and fixed broadband service as a measures for ICT usage show positive and significant impact on economic growth. This impact appears in OECD countries and advanced economies only but not appears in MENA countries and developing economies.

Backhaul Effect on User Association in cellular and WiFi Networks

Title: Backhaul Effect on User Association in cellular and WiFi Networks
Authors: Abdulshakoor, Ahmed I.; Elmesalawy, Mahmoud M.; Khalaf, Gamal A.
Abstract: The huge growth of data traffic has led to a continuous increase in capacity demands in mobile networks. A cost effective approach is to offload data traffic to WiFi network for enhancing the network capacity and improving the system performance. In this paper, we study the effect of the network backhaul on the selection decision for this network. We are dealing with a single and multi-hop wireless backhaul transmission under different circumstances and different numbers of associated users. One of MADM algorithms which is widely adopted is Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). We use TOPSIS in order to arrange the available networks, according to several metrics and based on the user priorities and requirements. Thus helping for optimum user-network association that will improve the system performance while satisfying the user requirements. The analytical results show the importance of taking the backhaul effect during the user association process and how the backhaul link effects the overall performance.
