Authors: Awrang, Baheer
Abstract: Despite increasing interest in education in war-stricken zones, limited empirical research has examined how distance higher education supports motivation, hope and future orientation among female students living under extreme social and political restrictions. This sequential mixed-methods study explores how distance higher education fosters psychological needs and goal-directed hope among Afghan female students living under restrictive conditions and how such processes contribute to short-term learning engagement and long-term prospects for national and international labour market integration. The study draws on Self-Determination Theory and Hope Theory to explore how the distance learning environment, alongside institutional and social supports, foster autonomy, competence, relatedness, agency, and pathways. Data were collected through an online questionnaire from 304 participants across Afghanistan who are enrolled in distance higher education, followed by in-depth interviews with 16 purposively sampled learners. The quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS software for inferential statistics and qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis via MAXQDA (version 2026), where empirical themes were mapped onto theoretical constructs. The findings reveal that despite numerous challenges, severe socio-economic survival hurdles, local cultural barriers, and digital connectivity constraints, accessing distance higher education significantly strengthens Afghan female students' intrinsic motivation, digital and professional skills, and goal-directed pathways. It acts as a vital mechanism for psychosocial survival, social empowerment and professional identity transformation. Considering its finding the study develops theoretical propositions on how distance education fosters and sustains motivation in conflict zones and offers policy recommendations for international universities and NGOs working on resilient education for women in unstable environments. By applying Self-Determination Theory and Hope Theory to war-affected and vulnerable educational contexts, this research contributes to emerging scholarship on inclusive, resilient and future-oriented higher education for conflict-affected learners facing structural barriers. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that despite severe socio-political barriers, distance higher education serves as a vital tool for psychological survival and hidden resistance, offering Afghan female students a window of hope and a strategic avenue to reclaim agency and achieve social empowerment under severe challenges.</summary>
