Abstract: Dieses Paper ist im Rahmen des Forschungsprogramms der Forschungsgruppe „Arbeiten mit künstlicher Intelligenz“ am Weizenbaum-Institut für die vernetzte Gesellschaft entstanden. Die Forschungsgruppe untersucht Prozesse der Einführung, Gestaltung und Nutzung von KI-Technologien in Betrieben mit Fokus auf die damit einhergehenden Veränderungen der Arbeitsinhalte, Arbeitsorganisation, Qualifikationsstrukturen und auch Mitbestimmung. Das Forschungsprogramm umfasst Fallstudien von Betrieben, Analyse ausgewählter Fragestellungen der Mensch-KI-Kooperation in Laborexperimenten sowie eine Betriebsbefragung, die dem hier vorliegenden Paper zugrunde liegt.</summary>

    <summary type="text">Title: Measuring Task-Based Advanced Automation Technologies &amp; Digital Assistance Systems in the National Educational Panel Study

Abstract: We introduce a new task-based instrument for the measurement of automation at the workplace. We refer to the automation technologies as "digital assistance systems", which we define as advanced automation systems such as software and devices that automatically complete tasks to support workers. They include artificial intelligence chatbots, image and video creation algorithms, predictive maintenance and analysis tools, digital instructions systems as well as wearable technologies and collaborative robots. Drawing on the task-based approach and recognizing recent technological advancements, we developed seven items capturing various types of digital assistance systems for the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS). Results from NEPS Starting Cohorts 4 and 6 show that usage varies by age, education level and correlates with complementary job tasks as well as measures of workplace digitalization. The instrument complements existing NEPS items on workplace digitalization and offers potential for longitudinal analysis of technological change in the workplace and its impact on skill requirements, inequality, and life-long learning.</summary>

    <summary type="text">Title: Automation and Work Through a Qualitative Lens: A Systematic Literature Review of Empirical Research from 2000 to 2024

Abstract: This paper presents a systematic literature review of qualitative empirical studies on the automation of work published between 2000 and 2024. It addresses three central questions: (1) What are the key findings of qualitative research on the outcomes of automation for work and their contextual and organizational determinants? (2) How do these insights compare to results from quantitative studies? (3) What gaps and future research opportunities emerge from the qualitative evidence? The review analyzes 77 studies selected from an initial pool of 4,794 publications. Using inductive coding combined with theory-driven categories, it reconstructs contextual factors (institutional regimes, sectors, occupations), input factors (technologies, managerial strategies, labor participation, organizational routines), and automation outcomes (task complexity, skill requirements, workload). The findings show no universal effects of automation; instead, outcomes vary strongly across sectors, occupational groups, and technological designs. Managerial strategies, labor power and organizational routines prove are important factors that shape the automation of work. To analyze the interaction of these factors and explain the divergent outcomes, integrating labor process theory and STS perspectives will be essential.</summary>

Abstract: This paper examines recent changes in the content moderation practices of major social media companies. Digital platforms have become a defining feature of contemporary societies. As their infrastructures increasingly mediate commercial activity, political organization, cultural life, and more, the retraction of measures meant to uphold standards and trust in their influence over online speech raises significant concerns. This paper briefly analyzes these developments in the context of ongoing processes of democratic erosion, particularly in the U.S. The goal is to foster future research and public debate by offering key insights into the implications of the current scenario for Germany and the European Union.</summary>
