Abstract (Translated):
There are several studies showing that household income seems to be an important determinant of children`s health. The objective of this paper is to document the relationship between income and children`s health in Brazil using three data sources and many health indicators. The empirical analysis is conducted with information from the 2002/2003 POF (Consumer Expenditure Survey), the 2003 Pnad (Brazilian National Household Survey) and the 2006 PNDS (Demographic and Health Survey). According to the results, children who live in poorer households are likely to have worse health status than richer children even controlling for many individual and parents - characteristics. In addition, there is evidence that richer children recover better from negative health shocks than poorer ones. Because children in poor health could have their productivity capacity reduced in the future, the evidence presented in this paper indicates that children`s health status in Brazil could be an important mechanism of intergenerational transmission of socioeconomic inequality.
